Why Swim Survival?

Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death to children under the age of four years. As soon as your child is independently mobile they are at the greatest risk of accidental drowning.
I believe teaching your young child to enjoy the water (water adjustment classes) without giving them a respect and a skill that could save their lives is potentially dangerous. I witnessed more then once children excited to be at the pool running out of the locker room and leaping into the pool, thinking someone will always be there to fish them out. Unfortunately that's not always the case. But unknowingly little ones learn this very dangerous lesson if you jump in the water, someone will always catch you.
Swim Survival training of infants and toddlers is a passion for me, knowing firsthand the outcome of a momentary moment when something was missed and tragedy happened. Drowning is the number one cause of death for children under the age of four.
I was determined to have my children learn to swim at the earliest age possible, when my oldest was two, I enrolled her in a program that offered a method called survival turn float, swim. After seeing my daughters amazing swimming skills at only two years old, I applied to become a trainer.
After completing Red Cross; W.S.I., Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid and training an additional 72 hours, teaching 500 lessons before becoming certified as an infant swim survival specialist.
1983 I opened and managed my own infant swim survival program here in Hillsboro and over the years have given 1000’s of lessons to infants and toddlers throughout the 90’s. “I know this training has saved lives”. I have heard firsthand accounts of situations that could have been tragic instead it became a wake-up call of how fragile life is.
I emphasize that this training does not drown proof a child, instead, what it can do is give you precious time while giving your little one six inches that can save their life!

Will My Child Be "Drown-proof"?

Any swimmer no matter the amount of training or experience can drown in an accident. Constant supervision, teaching your child safety rules around the water. Always use life jackets around lakes, streams, rivers boats, docks... Life is fragile handle it with care!

Goals of Swim Survival Training:

  1. Giving your child a valuable and positive learning experience with their individual needs foremost in my training techniques
  2. To have fun and build a lasting skill, and awareness of the importance of safety in and around the water
  3. Breath control (water intoxication is a concern. Babies must be taught not to swallow water).
  4. Survival turn and float
  5. Grabbing the side of the pool and climbing out
  6. Floating on their back fully clothed. (86% of all drowning accidents happen fully clothed).
  7. Turning from back to tummy, (down and ups - swim float swim).
  8. Training in all four arm strokes with proper breathing techniques.
